Todays Theme Was Hearts!

Not a lot to tell about it because I am still on my austerity program until October  1 st.  But I am so glad that tomorrow is my last day of it. I have a lot of things partially done but for the clasps.
I am still going to keep a tight belt though because it is helping me to clear enough clutter so I have a space to work.
Anyway, this is my latest work in the theme of hearts.  Polymer clay (of course) alcohol inks, acrylic paints, and Gilders paste. Thanks for checking them out!

Clay With A Vintage Slant

Day 19 of my austerity program and so far I am doing better than our government at saving money! I was so tempted today to run and pick up some mold making gloop so I could duplicate these two little pendants I made today. However, I restrained myself and set about coloring them with inks, acrylic paints and Gilders paste. They remind me of vintage enamel and metal pieces I have seen tossed aside in bins at the thrift stores.  Hopefully, this will not be the fate for these two.  I think they would look nice on a hand made chain with a bit of a patina.

First Day Back In the Studio

Today was my first day back to my studio after my "cat-tasrophe" and I miss my little companion lurking around underfoot.
However, I am determined to stay the course of my experiment in frugality; so far so good. Half the month is gone and I have not purchased anything new in the way of jewelry-making supplies. Although earrings have never been my favorite thing to make I found several sets of earwires in copper, gunmetal and silver so I decided that I would try to make an substantial dent in the pile. The nice thing about earrings is that you only need two of anything to make a complete pair; great for using up odds and ends that always plague the hoarder er..uh..collector.
Here are my offerings for today-quite eclectic with skulls, bones, hearts and squirrels!
I am using my Vintaj Big Kick a lot and am very glad I bought it before my purge!

In The Land Of The Pharoh's

I am still on my "no new supplies" diet; today I am using up scraps of copper and testing out some nice markers, patinas and my Gilders paste that have been languishing in a drawer. The scarab was made of left over gray clay painted antique gold before firing. Since I wanted a pendant that was a bit more substantial I used a scrap of copper sheeting for the backing. First I drilled the holes for jump rings and to attach the scarab to the backing. I textured the copper,  painted it with Jade Patina from Vintaj and sanded it back. The scarab got touched lightly with green Copic markers and heavily with Gilders paste in bronze and antique gold. The clay was attached to the copper by two headpins cut short, inserted and glued into the clay. I am very happy with the finished product; it has a good weight and heft to it, feels balanced and I love the green patina. Sadly my photography skills haven't improved so it (like me) looks better in person rather than a picture! Since it turned out so well I believe it is something I will be making more of in the future.

Buried Alive!

Like many of you (even those who won't admit it) I am a terrible pack rat.  I suspect that the "creative gene" is somehow linked with the "hoarding gene". And with jewelry crafters it can reach disastrous proportions. I always have the best intentions, but if I tag along with a friend on a trip to a vintage store all hope is gone! It seems there is always a forgotten chain, or vintage clasp that is calling out to be claimed and upcycled. Unfortunately, I always end up needed 'just one more thing' to complete whatever project they inspire. This is almost epidemic for me. I have tried to buy everything I need all at one time and somehow it never works out. So I have piles of beads, chain, glass, wire and so on scattered all over what is euphemistically called my 'studio'.
Money has been tight lately, so I decided to go on a "supplies diet".  For one month I am vowing to not buy anything else in the way of jewelry supplies. That means no new beads, clay, enamel, paint-nothing! Even if I just need a certain clasp to finish I product I am not giving in to the urge. So far I am a week into this new austerity program and somehow this has sparked my creativity. I find that I am making a lot more of my own chain and clasps, re-visiting beads that I had ignored in favor of "prettier" beads and overall looking at things in my workspace with a new eye.
One thing I have found is I do a lot more wire work, perhaps because I have so much of it stashed away. Or perhaps because pounding on wire is a good way to relieve the frustration of my diet.  I don't think this will last past the allotted month (eventually I will have to buy supplies again) but for now it has forced me to re-examine my stash and be more creative than when I have everything at my fingertips.  Below are a few samples of projects I have finished without buying "just one more thing".
